Secretary to Government, Surulere women and the politics of gender balance
As the All Progressives Congress (APC) begins the process of expanding the development of the local government areas in Lagos State, one area where the appointment of key officials in government promises some interesting features is Surulere Local Government.
Given its strategic importance in the political equation of Lagos State, a good number of people have lined up for the position of Secretary to the Government of Surulere.
There is a major factor in the race. Stakeholders in the politics of Surulere are insisting on gender shift. One woman who feels she has what it takes to perform effectively in that position is Hon Hajia Ganiat Folashade Alli-Balogun.
Aware of the interest the issue is generating in Surulere, Alli-Balogun told journalists that the position should be given to a woman.
Alli-Balogun is of the view that she has the wherewithal to perform the functions. Specifically, the former councilor in Surulere says she wants to make a difference.
‘’It takes clarity of vision, a deep understanding of development dynamics, fervent desire to create change and a human centered consciousness to spew forth the profound ideas that enables a man to excel in leadership.
The former chairman, House Committee on Education and Market in Surulere Local Government says her high sense of discipline, modesty, diligence, integrity, developmental philosophy and unalloyed support for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila and other leaders in Lagos State put her in good light.
Others are human and public relations skills, ability to address issues that are prone to crisis and placing high premium on community development and effective governance.
The great mobilizer and best deputy leader of the council in 2006 says she knows a lot about the workings of government.
She said the women are not competing with men but that they can support the chairman to fast-track development and ensure that the good people of Surulere enjoy the fruits of democracy
The core message of Alli-Balogun is that meaningful and sustained socio-economic growth can be achieved in Surulere Local Government Area through a secretary to government who is purposeful, well equipped, truly people oriented, broadminded and God fearing.
Alli-Balogun, a graduate of education, economics and business administration contested in 2004 and won in Ward F3.
As a lawmaker, she did not take the back seat. The President/Founders of TUSSAUDS Initiative empowered constituents and made the House to maintain a harmonious relationship with the executive without compromising its independence in the spirit of checks and balances that go with separation of powers. She also brought her knowledge and skill to bear with issues of law making.
In line with the objectives of Bamidele Yusuf Suleiman, Alli- Balogun recently unfolded a ten-point agenda to support the chairman. The items include youth and women empowerment, agriculture, health, education, infrastructural development, industrial revolution, culture and tourism revitalization, peace, communication and sports development.
