The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has recorded 38 milestones in three years, with major strides in renewable energy development, solar power deployment, clean cooking, hydrogen technology and local energy manufacturing.

The achievements, which underscore the Commission’s drive to reposition Nigeria’s energy sector, include the gazetting of the National Energy Policy and National Energy Master Plan, solarisation of healthcare and educational facilities, expansion of mini-grids and strategic international partnerships.

Abdullahi disclosed this as staff members, directors and management of the Commission celebrated his third anniversary in office at the ECN headquarters, acknowledging progress in the agency’s mandate, staff welfare and institutional development.

The anniversary celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on the Commission’s achievements under his leadership and renew its commitment to advancing Nigeria’s clean energy transition.

Among the landmark initiatives highlighted by the Director-General is the establishment of Africa’s first Barefoot Renewable Energy College in Osara, Kogi State, an intervention aimed at strengthening practical skills development and building local capacity for renewable energy deployment.

The Commission has also pursued solarisation projects in healthcare and educational facilities, expanded efforts to promote mini-grids and advanced initiatives in clean cooking and hydrogen development.

These interventions, alongside efforts to boost local energy manufacturing and deepen international cooperation, are designed to translate national energy policies into practical solutions that improve electricity access, empower communities and support sustainable economic growth.

Speaking during the anniversary event, Abdullahi expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and support under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also acknowledged the strategic guidance and partnership of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, in driving the country’s energy transformation.

The ECN boss said the milestones recorded over the past three years reflected the collective commitment of the Commission’s management and staff to delivering on its mandate and strengthening Nigeria’s energy future.

He equally highlighted improvements in staff welfare, conditions of service and internal infrastructure, describing them as important components of efforts to build a more effective and productive institution.

Abdullahi, who was visibly touched by the surprise reception organised in his honour, thanked staff members for the goodwill, accolades, kind words and gifts presented to mark the anniversary.

He said the gesture demonstrated a shared commitment to the Commission’s vision and responsibilities.

Despite the progress recorded, the Director-General maintained that more work remained to be done, pledging to consolidate existing achievements, improve staff welfare and intensify efforts to advance clean energy innovation.

He reaffirmed his commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leading force in renewable energy innovation and sustainable development, stressing the need to transform policies and technological advances into solutions that directly benefit Nigerians.

The ECN’s three-year milestone comes amid increasing national attention to renewable energy as a pathway to expanding electricity access, reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and supporting sustainable development.

With its focus on solarisation, mini-grid expansion, skills development and strategic partnerships, the Commission is seeking to strengthen the role of clean energy in Nigeria’s broader development agenda.
